![]() The NESC's standard NES controller can replicate the 3-button layout of the Genesis, but you'd need to "upgrade" your controller for 4-button SNES games. With multi-platform games, you may have a title use 3-buttons on the Genesis, but it may use 4-buttons for the SNES version. The 6-button Genesis pad came out well into the console's life, and many games released after it came out are feature a 3-button layout for those who did not upgrade their controllers (with the 6-button layout being a second option). There were many titles released for both the Genesis and SNES, often with differences in quality and content.
